The early history of ice cream isn't very clear. However, early forms of frozen treats are recorded to have existed as early as the 2nd century BC. Marco Polo is said to have brought back something resembling sherbet to Italy from his travels in China. Other frozen desserts began to appear throughout Europe. In the early days of America, what we now call ice cream was a popular dessert, but was enjoyed only among the elite upper class. It was a favorite of George Washington, who reportedly spent $200 on ice cream over one summer. In the 1800s with the invention of insulated ice houses, ice cream was more widely enjoyed throughout the United States. Ice cream is now one of the most popular and well-loved desserts throughout the world.
